IDITAROD XXXVIII Is a Go!

The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is one start closer to the beginning of "The Last Great Race on Earth". The Iditarod Restart begins tomorrow (March 7th) beginning at 2:00 pm Alaska Time (6:00 Eastern time) in Willow Alaska.  Live streaming coverage of the "real start" will begin at 1:45 pm Alaska Time on the Iditarod Insider.  To find out how you can watch the clock start ticking…from start to finish, click here.

The Insider GPS Tracker Gets the Green Light at the Restart

When the first musher leaves the chute in Willow Alaska, little bursts from an Iditarod Insider GPS Tracker travel to the Iditarod Insider via (Iridium) satellite. Those bursts will be providing up to the minute tracking of each team on the trail.  This year, the Insider GPS Tracker will also deliver instant replay to all Insider subscribers daily.  It's a must See. The 2010 Musher Drawing Banquet Was a Blast

The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Field is Set!

It was a packed house at the 2010 Iditarod Musher Banquet.  More than 2000 came to see IDITAROD XXXVIII mushers draw their starting positions for the race that starts on Saturday, March 6th, 2010.  The Iditarod Insider caught all the action, along with some very interesting interviews.  Seventeen new video clips were posted overnight.  If you don't have your subscription to the Iditarod Insider, now would be a good time!  Click here so see some of the sights and sounds!

Iditarod Honorary Musher Honored

Aviation Pioneer, Orin Seybert, founder of PenAir, was honored at the Musher Drawing Banquet as the Honorary Musher. Mr. Seybert began his journey as an Alaskan aviator when he was still in his teens. Click here to read more.

Iditarod Officials Prepare for the Start of the 2010 Iditarod

Late this afternoon, hundreds of volunteers will converge on downtown Anchorage to begin preparing the staging area and the chute for IDITAROD XXXVIII. The City of Anchorage will be bringing in tons of snow that has been stockpiled specifically for "The Last Great Race on Earth." It's a Herculean job, and one that many Iditarod volunteers look forward to. The Start will officially get underway at 10 am Alaska time on 4th Avenue in Anchorage Alaska. Race fans in Alaska can see the start in its entirety via the Iditarod's Official Television Station, KTUU. The Iditarod Insider will air Live streaming coverage of the race beginning at 9:45am Alaska time. Time To Pick Your Position

The 2010 Musher Drawing Banquet is Sold Out!

It's a full house! Tonight (March 4, 2010) more than 2000 race fans and mushers will fill the Dena'nai Center in Anchorage Alaska. Seventy-one mushers will pull their starting position out of an Alaskan Mukluk. From that point forward each musher will know their position in the 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. The Musher Drawing Banquet celebrates the start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race.  This long standing tradition really is the beginning of IDITAROD XXXVIII.  The Iditarod Insider team will be there covering the gala event… and if you're an insider… you'll get the chance to see great video of the mushers crossing the stage picking their starting positions!

Iditarod Trail Alert…

The latest update from the Iditarod Trail is that there was fresh snow at Finger Lake. Reports at Rainy Pass have been positive, and promising.  Iditarod Trailbreakers are working their way toward the Dalzell Gorge where they will begin filling ruts and making the trail toward Rohn passable.  From Rohn (through the Farewell Burn)  there is more bare ground than snow. There is still very little snow between Nikolai and Unalakleet. Right now the 2010 Iditarod Trail could use more snow. Look for another update on the Checkpoint later this evening.

Rohn Checkpoint Where the Tough Get Going!

The following is an excerpt from an article written by Stephanie White, official dog catcher, reporter and checker at Rohn Checkpoint.  Stephanie will be providing coverage from Rohn Checkpoint in the Alaska Range during the 2010 Iditarod.

Unlike some checkpoints, the Rohn doggie hotel is not for one night only. Due to weather, the four legged athletes that have been dropped from the race may be grounded for an extra day or so until planes can fly again. During that time, pups are cared for by veterinarians and the doggie hotel staff 24 hrs a day. Meals are provided, including breakfast in bed. Clean bedding and blankets are a standard. Doggie massages and pampering are a must. Dogs have even been known to come back to the Rohn hotel on their own for the fine services offered. Located in the quite comforts of the spruce forest the Rohn doggie hotel is by far the best in the area. No reservations required!!!

Merissa Osmar Wins The 2010 Jr Iditarod

It's a Family Tradition

And the Winner Is!

There's a new Jr. Iditarod Champion and she's the youngest link in the Osmar family to keep the tradition alive.  The 15 year old from Ninilchik, Alaska became the third Osmar to win the Jr.  Her Dad (Tim Osmar), won the race in 1982, 1983, and 1984.  Her sister (Nicole Osmar), won the race in 2004.   And her Grandfather (Dean Osmar) won the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race in 1984.  Click here to see Merissa's finish!

The Race to Break Trail Is On!

Iditarod Race Officials are working around the clock on the existing trail between Willow and Unalakleet, Alaska.  Many parts of the trail have little or no snow.  Iditarod Trail Breaker teams will begin the process of repairing sections of the trail in Rainy Pass in order to make it passable. Snowfall along with cooler temperatures would definitely help the situation.   We'll keep you updated throughout the week on the trail and on the work that's being done by the Trailbreakers.

IDITAROD XXXVIII is Set to Get Underway

This Saturday, March 6th. Don't miss any of the action on the Iditarod Insider. Live Streaming coverage of the start of the race begins at 9:45 am Alaska Time. This year's start will feature the 2010 Honorary Musher, Orin Seybert.  Orin has been an Alaskan Aviation Pioneer since he took to the skies as a teenager.  Orin will be riding in the basket of sled #1, driven by Jr Iditarod Champion, Merissa Osmar.

Iditarod Trailbreakers Are On The Move

With only a week to take advantage of colder weather and at least a little more snow,  Iditarod Trailbreakers will leave Willow, Alaska on Tuesday, March 2nd to begin the hard job of making the trail from Willow to Rainy Pass passable. Little snow and warm weather have combined to create demanding conditions all the way to Nikolai Checkpoint on the first third of the the trail that teams will travel on.  We are asking for all race fans to "Think Snow"!
