We Are Counting Down The Hours…

For the 2009 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race to begin.  At 10 am Alaska Time, "The Last Great Race on Earth" will kick off the thirty- seventh running of the the greatest sled dog race on the planet. Canine and human athletes will face some of the most extreme challenges, in the most extreme (and beautiful) environment anywhere.  And you can be a part of every minute of the race as an Iditarod Insider.  You'll have a front row seat to the start of the race (today)… the restart of the race in Willow Alaska (tomorrow) and the finish in Nome (on or about the 17th of March) in Nome, with live streaming coverage only on The Iditarod Insider.  In addition, the Insider team will once again provide hundreds of video clips covering every inch of the journey that the field of 67 will take.

On The Trail Again

The 2009 Field is Set!

The IDITAROD XXXVII field is deep with talent and after last night's Drawing Banquet it is now set.  Click here to see the 2009 Musher starting positions for tomorrow's start beginning at 10 am Alaska Time.  Many of the mushers who came off the stage talked about their teams… their drawing positions… and their concern about the near record snow depth that exists between McGrath and Nome.Click here to see and hear the sights and sounds.

4 Time Iditarod Champion Martin Buser's athletes are ready to go!

The 2009 IDITAROD FIELD GETS READY!

The race to get ready for the 2009 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is unfolding right before our very eyes.  While mushers prepare their teams for the 09 Iditarod, teams of volunteers are preparing for the deluge of race fans who are already arriving from all parts of the world!

Jr Iditarod Has a New Champion

17 Year old Cain Carter (son of Lance Mackey) won the 32nd Jr Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on Sunday, March 1st. Click here to see Cain's finish.

Fur Rondy Begins

All the pictures here are taken from my window overlooking D Street, looking towards 4th Ave. The first one on the left was taken Friday, then Friday night and most of Saturday we had snow! The snowfall really adds to the atmosphere of a Winter Party

Saturday afternoon, D Street was blocked off and set up for "Gold Rush Day". There's the BandStand right under my window! The following pictures are of Folks having fun, kids riding tiny ponies, and Folks dancing in the street!




People having all kinds of fun, and I had fun taking pictures from 2 stories up!

Here begins the re-enactment of the showdown with Soapy Smith. The Law is to your left, Soapy stands alone to your right.

"I'm innocent" Soapy cries and fires a shot into the air. Bad Move! The Law fires back!

Another Law man bends over the fallen Soapy Smith.

The Law man has fallen too; his Comrades pick him up and carry him away

"Soapy Smith" gets up off the ground and they all take a bow!

The Fur Rondy continues till March 8. I hope to have more pictures and reports of the fun!

Iditarod Volunteers Working the Load Out

5 time Iditarod Champion Rick Swenson's food bags are headed for Skwentna Alaska via the Iditarod Air Force!

The 2009 Iditarod Race "Behind the Race" is On!

Thousands of pounds of food drop bags were batched, weighed, and sorted last week.  Over the weekend the Iditarod Air Force began airlifting food, straw, and a host of other necessities to checkpoints along the first third of the Iditarod Trail.  Yentna, Skwentna, Finger Lake and Rainy Pass saw a lot of Iditarod activity. Iditarod's Canine Athletes Take Their Final Exam

Before their March 7th, 2009 debut.  Each four legged athlete is required to undergo an electrocardiogram as well as extensive blood testing prior to the race.  This is the first of a number of veterinary safety nets that the Iditarod has in place in order to provide the very best possible continuum of care for the greatest athletes on the planet… the dogs! Could IDITAROD XXXVII Be The One?

The 2009 edition of "The Last great race on Earth" is already shaping up to be a drama unlike any other.  Two time Iditarod Champion Lance Mackey will have to fend off the likes of four time champions Jeff King and Martin Buser.  Both are poised to join Rick Swenson as a five time Iditarod Champion.  But there's more… 2004 Champion Mitch Seavey,  Norwegian Bjornar Andersen, and the always competitive Paul Gebhardt all have their eyes set on making their way down Front Street in front of the rest of the pack.  The question will soon be answered as the race begins to unfold on March 7th.  Yup… IDITAROD XXXVII is definitely the one!
