Checkpoint: March 08, 2009

I was right there, at 4th Ave, at the Starting Line of the Ceremonial Start in Anchorage. What fun! I got to see DeeDee Jonrow who was wearing her signature pink parka and her dogs in her signature pink harnesses. DeeDee is a Breast Cancer survivor you know. And I got to see my Favorite musher, Martin Buser. He was wearing his signature red/black buffalo plaid hat. Those canine athletes are something to see in person. They were leaping as high as the leads would allow. They were howling and crying and barking with exuberant impatience. Once the hook was pulled out of the snow and they were allowed to run it was all business. How those dogs love to run!
Our Governor Sara Palin was there to give The Official Proclamation for starting The Last Great Race. When she was introduced the crowd went wild with cheers and clapping and chanting "Sara Sara". Then The Lt Governor was introduced and the crowd gave polite applause LOL Same thing happened when Senator Lisa Murkowski was introduced and our acting Mayor. Then "The First Gentleman" with their son Trig was introduced and again the crowd went wild, cheering, clapping and chanting "First Dude First Dude"! I guess the crowd there made it clear who their favorites were!

Time To Roll!

Iditarod's canine athletes moving up to Nome Alaska

And They're Off!!!

The 2009 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is off and running!  Thousands of race fans enjoyed a stellar Alaska day as the 67 participants in the 2009 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race bid farewell to the trail gaters, and road systems, and began their journey into the vast solitude of the Iditarod Trail.  Teams began their trek to Yentna and beyond with an extra hour of sunshine available (thanks to daylight savings time) to take in. Now "The Last Great Race" is on the go headed for Nome.

The Race to Watch the Race is On!

The Insider is hard at work bringing you "The Last Great Race" with Insider Video on Demand and Insider GPS Tracker. The Insider has already posted more than twenty new video clips today alone! The Insider GPS Tracker is already tracking each team going up the trail. An added dimension this year is the Iditarod Trail Breaker icon. The insider is tracking the Trail Breakers location and speed as they make sure the trail is marked and set for the mushers who follow. It's great to watch!
