2010 Checkpoint: The Front of the Pack is Headed for the Yukon

The last twenty four hours have all been about intuition… Kotzebue's John Baker's second guess about just where the trail was left him in a quandary just outside of Cripple.  Dallas Seavey capitalized on that decision and breezed into the Cripple Checkpoint winning the GCI/Dorothy Page Halfway Award! Meanwhile, Jeff King, fresh off his 24 hour rest in Takotna breezed into Cripple on a trail that was literally broken and groomed by his predecessors. Sleds are beginning to stack up in the tiny Cripple checkpoint.  Check out the activity on the Insider.  Updates on what's happening in Cripple are on the Insider right now.

We Are Counting Down The Days…

Until the first team climbs the Sea Ice in Nome and travels up Front Street to claim the honor of being the 2010 Iditarod Champion. Iditarod Teams Plow a Trail From Skwentna to Rohn!

It's hard to believe that a little over thirty hours have passed since the restart of Iditarod 2010 in Willow Alaska, and already teams are arriving in Rohn Alaska some  165 into the Alaska Range.  Canadian musher,  Sebastian Schnuelle was the first to arrive in Rohn.  He was followed by a number on other mushers in the early evening hours.  Click here to see the latest race standings.

Race Leaders Plowed The Trail To Rohn

Mother Nature did her best to make sure the 38th edition of "The Last Great Race on Earth" would be full of snow! Over the last 48 hours the road to Rohn Checkpoint, and the other side of the Alaska Range was full of fresh snow… not inches but feet! The teams that plowed through the snow hardly missed a beat as they made their way to Rohn.  Now comes the big challenge… the farewell Burn and the Buffalo Tunnels… monumental stretches of the trail from Rohn to Nikolai that have, in the past, been foreboding at best.  Teams should be arriving in in Nikolai late tomorrow morning.  To see the teams arrive in Nikolai tomorrow tune in to the Iditarod Insider.  If you're not an Insider, click here and find out what you're missing!

The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is Officially On!

At 2 pm Alaska time (6 pm Eastern Time), Willow Musher Linwood Fiedler's team was the first team to leave the chute in Willow Alaska.  It was the beginning of the 38th edition of "The Last Great Race on Earth."  Fiedler's team headed out toward the Big Susitna River and on to Yentna and Skwentna Checkpoints already!  Click here to see where all the mushers are right now!

The Iditarod Insider Team is Waiting For the First Team To Arrive in Finger Lake!

Iditarod Insider Analyst Bruce and EMMY award winning cameraman Jordan Caskey are in Finger Lake tonight. They arrived right before sunset. IDITAROD XXXVIII Is a Go!

The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is one start closer to the beginning of "The Last Great Race on Earth". The Iditarod Restart begins tomorrow (March 7th) beginning at 2:00 pm Alaska Time (6:00 Eastern time) in Willow Alaska.  Live streaming coverage of the "real start" will begin at 1:45 pm Alaska Time on the Iditarod Insider.  To find out how you can watch the clock start ticking…from start to finish, click here.

The Insider GPS Tracker Gets the Green Light at the Restart

When the first musher leaves the chute in Willow Alaska, little bursts from an Iditarod Insider GPS Tracker travel to the Iditarod Insider via (Iridium) satellite. Those bursts will be providing up to the minute tracking of each team on the trail.  This year, the Insider GPS Tracker will also deliver instant replay to all Insider subscribers daily.  It's a must See. The 2010 Musher Drawing Banquet Was a Blast

The 2010 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race Field is Set!

It was a packed house at the 2010 Iditarod Musher Banquet.  More than 2000 came to see IDITAROD XXXVIII mushers draw their starting positions for the race that starts on Saturday, March 6th, 2010.  The Iditarod Insider caught all the action, along with some very interesting interviews.  Seventeen new video clips were posted overnight.  If you don't have your subscription to the Iditarod Insider, now would be a good time!  Click here so see some of the sights and sounds!

Iditarod Honorary Musher Honored

Aviation Pioneer, Orin Seybert, founder of PenAir, was honored at the Musher Drawing Banquet as the Honorary Musher. Mr. Seybert began his journey as an Alaskan aviator when he was still in his teens. Click here to read more.

Iditarod Officials Prepare for the Start of the 2010 Iditarod

Late this afternoon, hundreds of volunteers will converge on downtown Anchorage to begin preparing the staging area and the chute for IDITAROD XXXVIII. The City of Anchorage will be bringing in tons of snow that has been stockpiled specifically for "The Last Great Race on Earth." It's a Herculean job, and one that many Iditarod volunteers look forward to. The Start will officially get underway at 10 am Alaska time on 4th Avenue in Anchorage Alaska. Race fans in Alaska can see the start in its entirety via the Iditarod's Official Television Station, KTUU. The Iditarod Insider will air Live streaming coverage of the race beginning at 9:45am Alaska time.
